Fortifications and military History

There are many fortifications around the Stockholm archipelago. From the 1500's to the cold war days. For 400 years, Vaxholm was Stockholm's "lock" against seaway invaders from the north. The Citadel, the centre of the long line of fortifications, still sits on its islet outside the island. A visit here easily brings you back in time. If you want, you can stay overnight inside the walls of the Citadel. You can also do this at Siaröfortet and Arholma Nord, which are two other popular military historical sites. At Djurö you'll find Djurhamn, which used to be one of the most important military ports. Here you can follow the Maritime Walking Trail, where history comes to life again. Visit the newly opened HAMN - Sweden's first battlefield museum - in Fisksätra in Nacka. Or go to Landsort and see the defense battery that was supposed to protect Sweden during the cold war. Come down and see how Swedish engineering created a nuclear-bomb-proof place on four floors.
